Kilim Rugs

There are a vast number of different carpets in the world. But kilim rugs stand apart from the rest. The very first rugs were manufactured in the East. Kilim rugs are deeply intertwined with the history of that region. The most ancient kilim rugs were weaved in the sixth century В.С. Archaeologists discovered them somewhere in the Near East, and now they are kept in the Hermitage.

These carpets are certainly to be weaved in Assyria (today’s Iraq). Nowadays such countries as Iran, China, India and Turkey are the biggest suppliers of kilim rugs. It is very hard to count all styles of kilim rugs.

There are gerat, mahal, mazara and many other types. They differ from each other by weaving techniques, designs, fabrics and so on. Despite the ascetic lifestyle of many families in the East, every home is completed with kilim rugs be it rich or poor. In some Islamic countries religion forbids human images so you can see only ornamental pictures on these kilim rugs.
