Penny Rugs

Penny rugs bear the name of the form of wool applique. First penny rugs appeared in the early mid nineteenth century. They earned their name from penny coins, which were used as templates to cut out the round forms applied to various backings, often with buttonhole stitch. Penny rugs used to be called “Pen Wiper Rugs”.

These round forms of circles were attached one to another, creating elaborate designs. Along with circles, many other figures were used in penny rugs, including simple flowers, fruits and animals. Sometimes, enhancing embroidery was added. No doubt, penny rugs will increase the beauty of any room and last for many years to come.

Usually penny rugs are manufactured of cotton, silk or rayon. Although these works of domestic art were called carpets, they were most often used as table rugs or throws rather than floor rugs. This makes a very good choice of penny rugs when it comes to buying throws for your bedroom or child room.
